Where are you from?

I'm from the South. North Carolina, Texas, Georiga. My dad was in the military.

How do you choose your subject?

Recently family has been a central theme in my work, but if I want to paint and am out of ideas I will admittedly go to Instagram for inspiration. I search in a random hashtag or physical place and pick out the images that speak to me most.  There are a lot of amazing images on Instagram.

Influences outside of art?

I came to SAIC to study comic art. I never thought I would leave as an oil painter too. I really like how diverse the DIY comic scene is in Chicago. CAKE Chicago is an amazingly cool event and comics definitely excite and fuel me when I'm not painting. My favorites are usually autobiographical in nature.

The G.O.A.T. is

Kerry James Marshall. They had a show at the MCA and it really inspired me. Seeing the paintings in person gave me the push to work with oil more. The work is stunning. (The other obvious answer is my mom, of course)

Challenges in your work right now?

In high school, all of my art was illustrative and made in programs like photoshop and clip studio. I'd really like to mix the tactility of oil paint and digitally produced art. I would like my comic practice and oil painting practice to blend more seamlessly
